Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiar was born 1882 in Ettayapuram, Madras Presidency , India. He was a great poet and he fighted for freedom from the British. He died on 11th September 1921 inMadras,India.
He was born to Chinnasamy Bharathiar and Elakkumy . Although he was a Brahmin, he did the things that the Brahmin disliked. Hence, he stayed away from the Brahmins. He was born, he lived and died at the same house at Ettayapuram. He was named Subbayya when he was born but his name changed later to Mahakavi Subramaniya Bhrathiar. He studied at a high school , ‘The M.T.D Hindu School’. His mother died when he was 5 years old. His father died when he was 16 years old. His last composition was, ‘Manitharaku Maranam Kidayadu’. It was written after he was hit on his head by an elephant and before his death on 11th September 1921.
One day when Bharathiar went to ParathsarathyTemplein Chennai(past: Madras)to pray. When he brought some bananas after praying, he saw the elephant that he regularly fed. Unfortunately, Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiar never realised that the elephant got angry. Bharathiar wore a Tallapa . The elephant used its heavy trunk and hit Barathiar’s head. He fell down, hit his head and fell unconscious. He was carried back home. He was alright after a few minutes later. On the night of 11th September 1921,he was on the bed. He only stayed awake for a few minutes. After that he…DIED!
He was cremated by 5 poor people.
