Also known as Kovai, Coimbatore is the second largest city of TamilNadu and one of the fastest growing cities in India. Its numerous cotton textiles have earned it the name “Manchester of India”. Cotton textiles, electric motors, pumps, automobile spares, iron steel and aluminium castings form major exports from Coimbatore. Situated at the foot hills of Nilgiris, Coimbatore is also known for its pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprise.
Places to visit
Within the city itself, there are a number of places that make visiting Coimbatore worthwhile. The V.O. Chidambaram Park, which has a mini zoo and a children’s amusement park. Situated near the park, the Nehru Stadium hosts a number of football tournaments and athletic meets. There is also a roller skating rink opposite the stadium. There are a large number of movie halls within the city. The Forest College Museum and the City museum have also proved to be major places of interest.
Recreation
Recreation is also an important element of Coimbatore. Black Thunder, a water sports and amusement park situated on Mettupalayam Road, is one such place. There are plenty of recreation clubs such as the Coimbatore Golf Club, The Cosmopolitan Club, The Coimbatore Club and The Coimbatore Flying Club. One of the most prominent tourist attractions found in the outskirts of Coimbatore is Udhamandalam, or rather, Ooty. The misty blue haze of Nilgiris and the fragrant rain forests lure millions of tourists to Ooty every year. Other popular places that are often paradises for holiday-makers are Kodaikkaanal, Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary, Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, The Siruvani Waterfalls and Dam.
Temples
There are numerous popular temples in Coimbatore, of which the Perur Patteeswara Swamy temple and the Marudhamalai temple of Lord Muruga are the most prominent ones. One of the most remarkable things about Marudhamalai is that one can see the whole of Coimbatore from the peak of the hill!

All in all, Coimbatore is definitely a city that is worth visiting. The spectacular sights and tourist attractions make it a beautiful city where you can be assured that you will not be disappointed after visiting it!
