INS Sudarshini and Dhol Cholom Troupe in Singapore – April 20th, 2015

To commemorate the India-Singapore 50 years of diplomatic ties, Indian Naval Sail Training Ship ‘Sudarshini’ meaning ‘beautiful lady Sundari’ named after the younger half sister of Buddha, was in Singapore. The ship was built by the Goa Shipyard for the Indian Navy.

We understand from the authoritative sources that, ‘The ship is a modern ship but uses sails to propel and therefore unique in many ways. Because of her unique attributes, she is an ideal platform for training young officers in the basic nuances of seamanship and seafaring’.

She was berthed at Vivocity promenade between 2nd and 7th March 2015. She was given a welcome dance by school children and the National Cadet Corps command band.

In this year Chingay Parade, in order to mark the 50 years of Singapore – India diplomatic relations, forty artists of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Akademi (JNMDA), Imphal performed the ‘Dhol Cholam’ dance. Dhol cholam is a drum dance which forms an essential part of the Holi festivities, known in Manipuri as Yaosang.

The 40-member Dhol Cholom troupe was choreographed by Shri Lokendrajeet Singh.
