The Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) is a Self-Help Group, set up in 1991, to address educational and socio-economic issues facing the Indian community in Singapore. SINDA aims to foster a confident Indian community that stands with the other communities in multi-racial Singapore. Through a variety of programmes, SINDA promotes education, family harmony and resilience to uplift the community.

On 1st August 2014, SINDA organised a dialogue session for Indian students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) with Ms Indranee Rajah, Senior Minister of State for Law and Education, Singapore. It was attended by over 40 students.

Ms Indranee, who is also the President of SINDA said that: “One must believe in themselves … Each individual must realise that your life journey is unique, it’s about finding your strengths. You shouldn’t judge or compare yourselves vis–à–vis other people.” Many students found the dialogue session inspiring and useful.

Volunteers play a vital role in SINDA. Many play a crucial role in programmes by nurturing a love for reading among children, mentoring youth, running centre-based literacy and numeracy programmes and tutoring under-performing students. In 2013, SINDA engaged 819 volunteers in both long term and ad-hoc programmes.

Since 2000, SINDA has organised its biennial Volunteers’ Tea in appreciation of its dedicated volunteers. On 2nd August 2014, SINDA had its Volunteers’ Tea at Nanyang Polytechnic Auditorium which attracted some 350 of its volunteers.
